  • What a start to the new year: water aerobics, conch harvesting, friends and family

What a start to the new year: water aerobics, conch harvesting, friends and family

Yes, today is what most people think the cruising life is like on a daily basis. After the 8:15 morning net (Don was the Georgetown net controller at the beinning of the season and passed it onto Bill from Charisma yesterday), I was feeling a bit slow and for the first time, was going to skip daily morning water aerobics.  But, Nicole and Yves from Zulu swung by in their dinghy with big smiles, and encouraged me that I could take it slow.  Tali stayed back to study about wine, as well as Don to work on various projects. After…

  • All I wanted for Christmas was….long hot showers and clean decks!

All I wanted for Christmas was….long hot showers and clean decks!

So maybe it was a very, very big Chanukah present, but due to Don’s perserverance, we now have our very, very nifty 20 gal per hour watermaker working.  We can have long hot showers, rinse our decks liberally, do a load of laundry daily if we wish, and most importantly, not worry about water quality as we did when we filled our tanks with marina water.  Right now, we’re looking at 350 parts per million but hope that might improve with a few tweaks or a different harbour 😉   The undersink Seagull water filter may also help a tad,…

  • I’ve upped my game…

So along with learning a lot about sail trim, plumbing, and securing mooring balls without losing the hooks, I’ve definitely upped my game in the galley. Learning to cook with new foods that don’t need much or any refrigeration is a challenge. I have to say my Japanese eggplant with scallions, garlic and ginger, and the Cuban Yuca root with lime, garlic and onions just rocked. And then there was the fresh turmeric, ginger, garlic chicken that went nicely with the eggplant for an Asian theme although I did substitute basmati, for jasmine, rice. In sum, we’re eating well even…

  • My first WordPress post via email!

My first WordPress post via email!

In preparation for the time we’ll be crossing oceans and still want to publish blogs, Don set up this new ability to update our WordPress site via email. Of course, at that point we’ll have very low bandwidth via our Pactor III modem ~4800 baud), so I won’t be uploading images then but I can splurge now! Recently, Don and I stopped at a very lovely marina, Safe Harbour in Cave Cay, which is a private island with it’s own landing strip. We had a lovely walk about, and a private beach with the soft sand folks rave about all…

  • Lobsta and a bent boat hook

If you want a really big lobster dinner, you’ve got to go to Farmers Cay Yacht Club at Little Farmers Cay. But the price you pay is learning not to try and catch a mooring ball at maximum tide. I lost my second boat hook, having lost the first to a mooring ball a few days ago, so I’m down to one remaining. This should be a good place to wait out some Westerly winds, as the mooring ball is attached to an I-beam that has been piled driven into the ocean floor 10 ft deep. If it can hold…
